Additional Tests

Barium Meal X-Ray
This test is a common adjunct to gastroscopy. While it is not as accurate as a gastroscopy for diagnosing cancers, it is a valuable adjunct for diagnosing motility disorders and hiatal hernias.

Barium Enema
This is sometimes done instead of a colonoscopy when the patient is very elderly and not very fit or complete colonoscopy cannot be performed due to a very tortuous or long colon or narrowing.

Ultrasound and CT scan
These may be performed when a gastroscopy or colonoscopy does not show any abnormality that may result in a patient’s symptoms e.g. pain. These tests evaluate for lesions outside the gastro-intestinal tract e.g. liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys and even small intestine. CT scan may be performed for staging once a cancer is diagnosed.
